John Edwin Sherman was born in Bucksport, Maine, in 1839, to Harriett Atwood and John Sherman.
John Sherman worked as a civil engineer. He began studying engineering in his home state, Maine, and continued his education in Pittsburg, Philadelphia, England, and France. John invented the "Sherman process," an iron refining process, in the 1870s. He was employed by Naylor and Co., a steel works company based out of Boston, New York, and London. Sherman's process proved integral in terms of advancing steel manufacturing methods and increasing steel ductility for shipbuilding.
John's spouse was Velzora A. Sherman and together they had one child, Harry Tuck Sherman, born in August 1866.
John died in 1917 in Belgium.
