Biography

David M. Talmadge was not originally a politician but a coal merchant in New York. Talmadge earned the Colonel status during the Civil War after he immediately responded to President Lincoln's call to arms. Eventually, Talmadge's career veered into politics. An 1867 letter from Frederick Seward to Clarence Armstrong Seward states that Talmadge was appointed "Commissioner on behalf of the United States" to Venezuela.
