Biography
Adolphus Simeon Solomons was born in New York City to John Solomons and Julia Levy Solomons. Adolphus Solomons was raised a Sephardic Jew and was devoted to his faith throughout his long life. He attended the University of the City of New York and opened his own stationary goods store. Solomons was civically-minded from his youth, starting a charitable fund to start a Jewish hospital in New York, now Mt. Sinai. In 1859, he opened a bookstore, stationary shop, and publishing company in Washington, D.C. with Franklin Philp. During his time in Washington, he cultivated several advantageous professional and personal connections with politicians and social figures, including Presidents Lincoln and Grant, as well as Civil War nurse Clara Barton. Solomons continued his philanthropic activities throughout his life, assisting in several aid societies that benefited the Jewish community and others, including the American Red Cross.
