Commander Richard Aulick was the son of Commodore J.H. Aulick and Mary (Conover) Aulick. He was the first graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. In 1850, Aulick married Mary Isabel (Ogston) Aulick, who later married George Maxwell Robeson. Frances "Fanny" Seward likely references Richmond as "Dick Aulick" in her 1862-1863 diary while in Washington, D.C.
