Biography
Elias Warner Leavenworth was born in Caanan, New York. He studied at Yale University and practiced law in Syracuse, New York until 1850. Leavenworth was actively engaged in local politics and community service. He was appointed Brigadier General of the Militia in 1836. He served as President of the village of Syracuse from 1839-1841, 1846, and 1847. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1850 and 1857. He was appointed New York Secretary of State in 1854 and 1855. He was elected to the 44th U.S. Congress in 1874 and served from 1875-1877.
