Biography
Jacob Dodson was a free born African-American man who accompanied John C. Fremont on three expeditions of the American West. He was originally from Washington, D.C. After his expeditions, he was employed as a messenger/attendant for the U.S. Senate. At the start of the American Civil War, Dodson offered to muster a company of black soldiers, but was rebuffed.
