John Baxter Taylor lived as a child in Washington, D.C., at one time in the home of African-American explorer Jacob Dodson. He is possibly referenced in a letter written by Dodson to Frances Miller Seward, dated June 16, 1852, thanking her for her assistance in sending "John" to college. At some point, he moved to Philadelphia, PA, where he worked for the Pullman Car Company.
