Biography
Hudson Taylor was born in New York City to Robert Taylor, a doctor from England, and spent part of his childhood in Poughkeepsie, NY. At the age of 14, he moved to Washington, D.C., and in 1848 opened a book and stationary shop with Charles Broadnax Maury on Pennsylvania Avenue. Their business was very successful and received several printing commissions from the U.S. Government. In her 1858-1859 diary, Frances "Fanny" Seward references buying "note paper, etc." from their Washington business. During the American Civil War, Taylor moved back to Poughkeepsie with his family where he remained until his death.
