Biography
George F. Comstock was born in Williamstown, Oswego County, New York to Serajah Comstock and Ann (Benedict) Comstock. He graduated from Union College in 1832. After graduation, Comstock taught school and studied law, passing the bar in 1837. He became a partner in the legal firm of Davis Noxon and Elias W. Leavenworth of Syracuse, New York. Comstock married Cornelia Noxon in 1839. In 1852, Comstock was appointed Solicitor of the United States Treasury by President Millard Fillmore. He was nominated by conservative Whigs "Silver Greys" and members of the "Native American" party to the New York Court of Appeals in 1855 and was successfully elected. He served in this role until 1861. Comstock continued a distinguished career in the law until his death in 1892.
