George Hunt Pendleton was an Ohio State Senator from 1854-1856, and then served as a Democrat in the House of Representatives from 1857-1865. George Pendleton was anti-Civil War, and opposed the Thirteenth Amendment. He ran an unsuccessful campaign for the vice presidency in 1864 against Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. From 1885 till his death in 1889 he served as the Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Germany. Him and his Wife, Mary Alicia Key Pendleton, were guests at a dinner party the Sewards were invited to in 1859.
