For 50 years, Lewis H Machen worked as a clerk for the office of the secretary of the United States Senate. Most notably, He is credited with removing secret documents and resources from the senate before the British advance in 1814. He supported the Whigs and was critical of Andrew Jackson's presidential position starting in 1828.
