Biography

Badger practiced Law in North Carolina following his admission to the bar in 1814. He later became a part of the Whig party, and was an integral figure in the in the Whigs 1840 Presidential victory of William Henry Harrison. Upon the President taking office, Badger was appointed as the Secretary of the Navy, but resigned in the wake of William Henry Harrison's death, and Badger went back to private practice. However, after William Henry Harrison's succeeder, John Tyler vetoed two bills which the Whigs were not in support of, Badger had decided to run for US Senate, and was elected in 1846. He appears in the letter 18490604AFH_FMS1, where Badger's former house in Washington D.C is offered to FMS following the news of the Seward's anticipated move to Washington D.C.
