Catherine and her sister inherited 6 enslaved people from their father Thomas Griffith after he passed away, despite both Catherine and her sister abhorring slavery. So, they sought to finance the emancipation and freedom of the slaves they inherited, despite Martha Griffith Browne being vilified in the south after the publication of her first abolitionist novel.
