John Wager is mentioned in Frederick William Seward's letter to his father, William Henry Seward, on May 22, 1851. Wager is referred to as an art seller, who previously displayed works for sale at Markham Hall. He is knowledgeable of Melchior d'Hondecoeter's paintings, one of which he sells to Frederick William Seward, saying that it was one that William Henry Seward had admired when they spoke in his shop.
