Biography
Elizabeth Lee Follen was born in Boston, Massachusetts into a prosperous and progressive family. In 1828, she married Reverend Karl (Charles) Theodor Christian Follen, an exile from Germany for his progressive teaching and ideas. Elizabeth and her husband were staunch anti-slavery advocates. After her husband's death in 1840, Elizabeth engaged in writing and editing various religious publications for children. She is mentioned in a letter written by Elizabeth Palmer Peabody to Frances Miller Seward, dated June 22, 1857, involving the anti-slavery work of Mattie Griffith Browne.
