Biography
George James Gallagher was an acquaintance of Clarance Armstrong Seward. Gallagher worked at the Custom House in New York City and was introduced to William Henry Seward by Clarance in a December 1856 letter.
According to biographical information, Gallagher was from Geneva, NY, and studied at Columbia University. He was then employed at Howland and Aspinwall, before purchasing The True Sun. When the paper failed, Gallagher went to work as a weighmaster at the Custom House. He later moved back to Geneva, where he died in 1889. He married Elizabeth Anne Tillman on October 8, 1844 and does not appear to have had any children.
