George Washington Custis Lee was the eldest child of Gen. Robert E. Lee and Mary Anna Randolph Custis Lee of Arlington, Virginia. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1854. Lee served in the U.S. Army until May 1861, when he resigned his commission and joined the Confederate army. He primarily served as Aide-de-camp to Confederate President Jefferson Davis during the American Civil War. Lee taught at Virginia Military Institute and then later became president of Washington College (now Washington & Lee University) after his father's death. After his mother's death, Lee fought for and obtained possession of their Arlington estate that had been seized during the Civil War. Lee promptly sold the property back to the U.S. government for continued use as a national cemetery. Lee never married and had no known children. f
