A fictional character in Richard Brinsley Sheridan's 1777 play "The School for Scandal." She is the gossip who portrays honesty and kindness, but who is actually guilty of spreading rumors. Frances "Fanny" Seward references her character, played by a Mrs. Archibald/Archibold, in her 1858-1859 diary after she attended a performance of the play in Washington, DC.
