Susana Cossum was born in England and married Francis Cossum, an Auburn, New York, sash and blind maker. According to the 1870 U.S. Census, the couple had one child Agnes Cossum, a friend of Frances "Fanny" Seward. In her 1858-1859 diary, Fanny references "Mrs. Cossum" acquiring a puppy from the Syme Family's dog, Victoria. In the 1880s and 1890s, Auburn City Directories list a "Susanna Cossum" alternatively operating a fancy goods store, confectioner, and variety store.
