Biography
David Gray was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of Philip Cadell Gray and Amelia Tasker Gray. In 1849, David and several members of his family emigrated to America on the ship Constitution. Gray spent several years in Wisconsin where his family worked a farm. In 1856, he was offered a job in Buffalo, New York, and relocated to that city. Here, he pursued writing and involvement in literary clubs. In 1859, he became a writer for the Buffalo Daily Courier where he remained employed until 1865. From 1865-1868, Gray traveled the globe writing letters about his travels for the Buffalo Daily Courier. Gray traveled extensively again prior to his death in 1888. Frances "Fanny" Seward references meeting him in her 1858-1859 diary while he was visiting his uncle, William M. Gray, in Buffalo.
