Biography

Robert Schuyler was born in Rhinebeck, New York, the son of Philip Jeremiah Schuyler and Phoebe (Rutson) Schuyler. He attended Harvard University and became a successful investment broker in U.S. railroads, earning him the moniker "The Railroad King." After a succession of railroad disasters in 1853, Schuyler became the focus of investigations into his business practices. The investigations revealed that he had sold unauthorized stock certificates and maintained unethical and illegal bookkeeping practices. His actions undermined the stability of the railroad industry for years. Schulyer fled to Paris, France where he died in 1855. Emilia Kossuth Zsulavszky complains in a letter to Frances Miller Seward, dated February 26, 1858 about the effects of the "Schuyler Fraud" on her own financial situation.
