Biography
William van Rensselaer was the grandson of Gary Van Sackett, a close friend of William Henry Seward. He grew up in Seneca Falls, NY, Graduating from Seneca Falls academy as A Civil Engineer, and later worked towards enlarging the canals from 1857 to the breaking out of the civil war. Once the war started, he was enlisted and commissioned to be first Lieutenant in the Fiftieth New York Engineers, building pontoon bridges and planning structures that constructed both offense and defense for the Union during the war.
