Biography

Alexander Henry Was the Mayor of Philadelphia from 1858-1865. He started as an attorney, creating a legal firm in Philadelphia in 1844. Then, in 1845-46, he started as the Secretary to the Board of Directors at Girard College. Later, he became active in politics as a member of the Whig party. During his time as Mayor, he was a supporter of the Union, but worked to enhance the Police department as a measure of decreasing violence against Confederate Sympathizers in Philadelphia.
