Biography

Don Carlos Buell was born in Marietta, Ohio and attended West Point Military Academy graduating in 1841. He served during the Seminole Wars and the Mexican-American War. During the American Civil War, he led the Army of the Ohio in Kentucky with whom he had several successes. His delay in pursuing the retreating General Braxton Bragg from Kentucky led him to be relieved of duty and to become the subject of an investigative commission. He is referenced in a letter written by Samuel Swasey Seward Jr. to his uncle, then Secretary of State, William H. Seward, dated March 19, 1863.
