Biography
John Frederick Kensett was born in Cheshire, Connecticut, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Kensett. He studied engraving and drawing and worked with his father and Peter Maverick, a New York engraver. In the late 1830s, he transitioned to landscape painting exclusively for his living. He studied abroad from 1840 -1847. Kensett is referenced in a letter written by Henry Shelton Sanford to Frances Miller Seward, dated August 18th, 1863, in which he mentions Kensett's work on display at a Triennial Exhibition in Brussells, Belgium. The work was the property of Sanford.
