Biography
Henry Cotton Shumway was a portrait painter and photographer who spent much of his career in New York City. He was also a member of the Seventh Regiment of New York, where he served as a captain for 28 years. He served with the regiment in the Civil War.
Shumway was likely part of a committee the Seventh Regiment sent to Washington DC in 1858. This committee was looking to secure additional arms for the regiment and was successful in this task thanks to William Henry Seward's assistance. According to a letter published in The Washington Union in October 1858, this committee consisted of Lieutenant Colonel Marshall Lefferts, Captain Henry C. Shumway, Major Benjamin M. Nevers, Captain James Monroe, and Reverend Doctor Sullivan H. Weston.
