Biography
Major Benjamin Nevers was an officer in New York's Seventh Regiment, based in New York City. He enlisted in the Sixth Company in 1845, and was elected first lieutenant in 1848, captain in 1848, and major of the Regiment in 1861. It is not known if or what his profession outside of the regiment was. Nevers married Virginia Tallmadge and had at least one daughter with her.
Nevers was likely part of a committee the Seventh Regiment sent to Washington DC in 1858. This committee was looking to secure additional arms for the regiment and was successful in this task thanks to William Henry Seward's assistance. According to a letter published in The Washington Union in October 1858, this committee consisted of Lieutenant Colonel Marshall Lefferts, Captain Henry C. Shumway, Major Benjamin M. Nevers, Captain James Monroe, and Reverend Doctor Sullivan H. Weston.
