Biography

Dr. William A. Hammond was the 11th Surgeon General of the U.S. Army, he served in that position from 1861-1864. He is known for modernizing not only battlefield medicine practices, but also hospitals as a whole. His main initiative was to improve hygiene through organizing inspections of all union hospitals, as well as standardizing medical procedures. Dr. Hammond was mentioned in a letter from Fredrick William Seward to George Washington Seward; dated September 16th 1862.
