John Breckinridge Payne

Biography
John Breckinridge Payne was born in Kentucky, the son of Edward and Elizabeth (Howard) Payne. He attended Transylvania University and successfully practiced medicine. On November 15, 1832, he married Elizabeth Trotter Montgomery and the couple resided at his family estate called "Anchor and Hope." In 1846, the couple relocated to another estate. Payne had four children. He is mentioned in a letter written by Henry Onderdonk Chesebro to William H. Seward, then acting Secretary of State, as a reference on behalf of Mrs. Elizabeth Vertner whose Lexington, Kentucky home was occupied and damaged by Union troops. Vertner sought redress for these damages.
