Biography
Closson P. Burgess was born in Massachusetts and resided in Auburn during the 1850s and 1860s. The 1850 U.S. Census records him employed as a machinist. The 1860 Census lists him as the Keeper of Auburn Prison. Sometime between 1870 and 1872, he relocated to Rochester, New York, where he resided until his death. Burgess writes a letter to William H. Seward Jr., dated May 2, 1864, in which he asks for a loan to build another house on his lot. A follow-up letter written by William H. Seward, Jr. to his brother Frederick W. Seward, dated May 14, 1864, indicates that Burgess owed the Seward Bank $890.00 on existing loans for two lots and one house.
