Biography

Stephen Johnson Field was born in Haddam, Connecticut, the son of David Dudley Field and Submit Dickinson Field. He graduated from Williams College in 1837 and studied law with Attorney General John Van Buren. After passing the bar in 1841, Field worked alongside his brother David Dudley. In 1849, he left for California where he assumed various duties until his election to the California State Assembly in 1850. In 1857, he was elected to the California Supreme Court where he served until 1863. In February 1863, Field was added to Lincoln's enlarged U.S. Supreme Court as a tenth justice.
