Biography

Born in New York City, Samuel Deveaux began his career in a land office in Canandaigua, New York. From there, he worked as a store owner, school commissioner, and acquired various tracts of land around Niagara, New York. After his death in 1852, De Veaux College was created from his will, made up of $262,000 and a 364 acre farm. The college was meant to educate fatherless and destitute boys in the area to learn industrial skills. The school operated as a military school until about 1950, when increased popularity in public education dwindled its numbers, and led the school to close in 1971.
