Jane Caroline Petigru Carson was born in Charleston, South Carolina, to James Louis Petigru, a distinguished attorney, and Jane Amelia Postell. She was well educated in Charleston and in New York, New York. She studied art at the Cooper-Union and with artists in Europe. In 1841, she married a rice planter, William Augustus Carson. The marriage was strained and the couple lived separately beginning in 1850. Caroline, as she was called, lived in New York, NY until 1872 when she relocated to Rome where she pursued her artistic interests until her death. Frances "Fanny" Seward references Mrs. Carson visiting the Seward's Washington, DC home in her 1866 diary.
