Biography

John Vaughan Lewis was born in Massachusetts, the son of William Henry Lewis and Emeline Bartow Lewis. He served as Rector of St. John's Episcopal Church in Washington, DC, from 1865 until 1880. In the last year of her life, Frances "Fanny" Seward documents several conversations with "Mr. Lewis" in her 1866 diary as she contemplated her own confirmation in the church. On March 25, 1866, Fanny was confirmed, along with her sister-in-law, Anna Seward.
