Biography
Prosper Montgomery Wetmore was a successful New York City merchant. He participated in the New York State Militia and served as Brigade Inspector and Paymaster General. From 1834-1835 he served in the New York Legislature. He was a Regent of the University of New York in 1833, President of the American Art Union until 1851, and served leadership roles in the New York Chamber of Commerce. During the American Civil War, he helped found a Union Defense Committee, on which he served until the close of the war.
