Baron Henri Jean Joseph Adrien Van Havre was born in Schooten, Belgium at Chateau du List. He was trained in the law and held several diplomatic positions before serving as a Secretary of a Belgian Legation to the United States. In 1867, he married Camilla Hurlburt Webb, of Ledyard, Cayuga County, New York. The couple had five children. Frances "Fanny" Seward references a visit by Van Havre and Baron Beaulieu at the Seward home in Washington, DC, in her 1866 diary
