Emily Souder Linnard Neilson Hopkins was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Sarah J.(Souder) Linnard and James Mifflin Linnard Jr. She attended a Quaker school in Philadelphia. She married first Robert Henry Neilson, with whom she had one daughter, Dorothy Neilson Kuhne. She married second, Frank Tucker Hopkins. According to U.S. Census records, she lived past 1950. Frances "Fanny" Seward references her birth in her 1866 diary.
