Biography
Mary (Towne) Burt was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. She attended the Auburn Young Ladies Institute in Auburn, New York under the directorship of Mortimer L. Browne. In 1865, she married Edward Burt of Auburn. Burt was a committed temperance advocate and the first president of the Auburn chapter of the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). She served as the editor and publisher of "Our Union," a newspaper produced by the New York State chapter of the WCTU. Frances "Fanny" Seward records her baptism into the Protestant Episcopal Church, along with her sister, Amanda Towne Pomeroy, in Auburn in her 1866 diary.
