Robert Benton Seeley was born in London, the son of a successful bookseller and publisher. In 1826, he took over control of the family business. Seeley's publishing interests reflected his evangelical Christian background. He engaged in several social organizations established for the benefit of the poor and working classes. Seeley is referenced as the father of Sir John Robert Seeley, a British historian and essayist, in Frances "Fanny" Seward's 1866 diary.
