Biography

Lord Lawrence was the former Governor-General of India, serving from 1864-1869. Most notably during his governance, he established telegram lines to India, ordered British troops into the Punjab region, and introduced a universal postal system to India. Prior to his position as Governor General, he lived in Delhi, serving as assistant judge, tax collector, and reformer of tax collection services. He is mentioned in a letter from William Henry Seward to Janet "Jenny" MacNeil Seward in 1871, where William Henry Seward is said to have met him during his sailing through the Bay of Bengal.
