George H. Chatterton wrote to William Henry Seward, Jr. on May 26, 1865 seeking a position with a government office in Washington, D.C. George's father worked in Auburn, NY, and George was born there. It is likely that the "intimations" of an offer of a position that he mentions are the result of knowing the Seward's through sharing a hometown. His father, Leonard Chatterton, was a carpenter in Auburn.
