John Ross Browne is better known as J. Ross Browne, as he signed his January 22, 1869 letter to George Frederick Seward. They discussed China, which is where he was briefly appointed minister. His entrance to the US was a schoolteacher banned from Ireland, and from there he moved around the country with his family. He is also known for his literary accounts of life and travels.
