Mary Miller Shaw was the daughter of New York printer Washington "Washy" Shaw and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Loomis. Mary was born in Auburn, New York, and never married. The Shaw family appears to have moved to Albany, New York, before 1870 when they appear in that city for that year in the U.S. Federal Census. Frances "Fanny" Seward references playing a game of "chance bag" with her and her sister Sarah Louisa (Shaw) Fuller in her 1858-1859 diary.
