Biography

Stephen Van Rensselear IV was the eldest surviving son of General Stephen Van Rensselaer. He graduated from Princeton College in 1808, and in 1839 inherited all of the manor lying in Albany County from his father. Soon after his father's death began the "Anti-Rent" agitation on his property, which grew into an economic and political movement against the whole system of leasehold land tenures. The movement continued with serious disturbances and bloodshed for several years. This was not settled until amendments to the constitution of 1846. 

On January 31, 1817 he married Harriet Elizabeth Bayard.
