Written by the hand of WHS's secretary Albany Dec: 25. 1838
My dear J,
Stipulate with Mr McClurg
of his house the first of May or June if he wishes. Have your papers
in order, and hold yourself in readiness to come down and before antici-
-pated in January or the first of February. You are to lose your office,
and may be looking out for something better in a quiet way, and I
have no doubt I shall be able to contribute successfully. The long
and short of the whole matter is that John Duer
-cessor, that the huge Bonds of the Chautauqua Proprietors are to be can-
-celled, the Bonds & Mortgages to be taken in payment of the same, and
what is left is to be relinquished to the owners. This deliverance you will
appreciate and be more grateful than I can be. Preserve it for the
present as a secret, known only to Weed
-tary
W. H. S.
P.S. Say to all friends who have written to me, that although I am
not able to answer their letters, they are all cared for as they deserve.
After the first of January, I will answer them personally.

Your Brother is oppressed with cares and responsibil-

constantly. His position is one of vast inte[ rest ]
Reason: wax-seal

The Westfield Festival was glorious. Henry ex-
claims, "Who could have written those toasts?"
