Auburn 2 March 1840
Dear Henry
Your remark, that you could
wish for my sake, that the nomination for Sur-
rogate had been made & over, before my return,
induced me to speak unwittingly of it, yesterday
morning (Sunday) and in an hour it was all
over town. Poor W.C.B.

exception of the candidate, it is thought the nom-
ination gives general satisfaction.
On my first call at the office of W.C.B. he

& was attentive & willing as formerly about bu-
siness - on my second call, he spoke of his dis-
appointment & seemed wilful & severe. In the
course of conversation, he remarked that there
were two men - one in the village & one out of it,
that controlled the appointments of the county-
