Land Office March 20
1840
Dear Henry
Having made safe arrival
at home and dispatched my accumulated
correspondence, I feel inclined to trouble you
with a word or two.
as on former occasions of return
from a visit to you, I feel increasing
regret that I failed of consultations with
you upon several points. I have wished
very much to object obtain your judgment
whether my mode, with the Attorneys
of the county, is wise & judicious:
whether my plans of collections is right;
particularly in regard to Articles:
I wished also to ask you questions about
certain points of law, bearing upon our
proceedings in the office - and I further
wished to explain to you something of my
own private affairs: but as no proper
opportunity offered, I must reserve my
enquiries, to another day.

Our receipts are small - perhaps one
quarter less than during the same season
last year. I have no means of knowing
at a glance, how much they have fallen
off although I intend soon to have - Smith

did not post up his books while I was
absent - a thing he never neglected before -
but this description of trouble is nearly over
as he will leave me in a month or two.
The pressure occasions much complaint
among the people & much suing here.
We have an hundred mortgage

cases in
advertisement - all nearly two years behind:
but I trust that a very large proportion
of them will be adjusted before sale day.
Out of 200 cases (perhaps) of former ad-
vertisement, not more than 20 cases now
remain unsettled.

I hope will execute the power I left with

to answer him, I will state that the
interest received here on your equitable
proportion of the estate, amounts to a

sum less by $6.260, than the interest
due upon your bond, from its date up to
the 31st day of Dec last. And so of the
others in proportion. The whole receipt for
you has been, up to the same day, as
Principal $35.844.96 - as Interest $24.152.70
not including your proportion of $5.075.
received on deposite in sums too small
for endorsement on bonds.
I have supposed that it would
be well for you to join heartily &

I greatly fear, whether granted or not
