My dear Sir,
I am your grateful debtor
for the kind words of sympathy,
with which you have welcomed
my pamphlets.
Let me thank you further for
sending me a copy of yr brilliant
argument in the Van Zandt
Death: 1847
case. I think the day will
yet come when the sentiments
there announced will animate
[bottom Margin] Hon Wm. H. Seward
our jurisprudence, & our whole
Govt. Until then, there is
work to be done by the friends
of Freedom—which cannot
be postponed.
Believe me, my dear sir,
with regard, faithfully yours,
Charles Sumner
