–
Sir
I respectfully apply for a leave of absence of 60 days
with permission to apply for an extension. I have been
2 years and 4 months on duty, have applied for and
received leave of absence only from Post and Regimental
Headquarters. There are at present 2 Commissioned officers
with my company (R. 5th Infantry) besides myself –
Respectfully your Obdt Servt
A. H. Seward
2 Lt. 5t Infantry
To Major W. W. Mackal Mackall
Ass’t Adjutant General
Head quarters Western Division –
Dear Father
The preceeding is a copy of my application for
a leave of absence of 2 months from Division Head
Quarters – As this is so far out of the World that it
would take nearly all the time to go and return
I wish you would endeavour to get an extension of
4 months, if possible, or less – I write in haste to send
by a boat for New Orleans, the mails from the
Mississippi here, being bei very uncertain –
Your affectionate Son
A. H. Seward” –
