Auburn August 30: 1851:
My dear Uncle
Mr Elisha White
me a Bill yesterday against you for
$5. for making an Estimate of the
Expenses of building in the rear of Messrs
Quick
me that he could ill afford to lose
the time spent in making the Estimate
or the money which was due to him
therefore – He is in failing circum-
stances, harassed by a sea of harassing
creditors and deprived by sickness of
the ability to labor – He contemplates
making an assignment and came
to the office to consult with you as
to the propriety of the step – I assured
him that you would pay the Bill:
Can I do so? He wants the money now.
Ever gratefully
Clarence A. Seward
